Monokroussos Wins Mishawaka Old-Style

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

High-powered chess master Dennis Monokroussos, South Bend, had no trouble rolling over 5 opponents in a row at the Mishawaka Old-Style tourney on the weekend of Dec. 1-2, 2007.

Les Kistler, Mishawaka,  took second with 4-1, but not without difficulty.   His round 5 game vs. Mike Vidulich was a real barnburner.  In the endgame Les had 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, and 4 pawns vs. Mike's Queen, Bishop, and 6 pawns, and the complexities made the game go on for 5 1/2 hours before Les forced a win.

Jim Longuski, Lafayette, and Daniel Cruz, DeKalb, Ill., came from behind to finish 3rd and 4th.  There were many withdrawals and some screwy pairings due to the small number of players.   More details later...
